The final exam will take place on June 17 & 18 and will be oral format. A 2-3 page synopsis is due on April 30 to the exam office. Exams can be taken either individually or in groups of no more than 3.

The general subject of the exam will be around the theme of the course - game culture. Students should pick a subtopic within that general framework to explore in more detail. Potential subjects could include:

• gender in games
• the role of player identity in games
• the culture of game cafes
• socialization in first-person shooters
• the social use/cultural meaning of avatars in games
• guild/clan structures as social institutions
• intellectual property issues in games
• race in games
• player-produced game culture (everything from mods to websites)

1) articulation of the topic/question/problem to be addressed
2) brief overview (for the purposes of the future discussion) of the relevant literature
3) preliminary findings/position/theoretical position
