ENERPLAN

While most of the world is moving towards more CO2 neutral energy means, the transportation sector has stayed addicted to fossile fuel. Every year the Danish container ships discharge as much CO2 as Denmark in total. Moreover, the road transportation in Denmark stands for 27% of the final energy consumption in the country. By developing intelligent IT-based planning tools for running the transportation sector we aim at reducing the energy consumption and hence the environmental impact. ENERPLAN (Energy Efficient Tranportation Planning) includes decision tools for planning a route network such that a higher load factor can be achieved, algorithms for filling containers and vessels more efficiently, and methods for finding more efficient distribution paths. Pervasive computing methods using RFID and hand-held devices will be used to integrate all of these approaches and provide decision support to sudden changes, such that superfluous energy consumption can be avoided. Finally, we will develop decision tools for customers which highlight the environmental impact of various transportation solutions. The research is carried out in cooperation with some of the leading transportation companies, ensuring that the developed methods will have a significant impact on the CO2 emission.
