!Project ideas

The following are draft ideas of smaller research projects (semester projects, master thesis, ...)

!!Optical/acoustic rain sensor

Reliable low cost disdrometers (rain gauges) remain a major challenge in hydro-meteorological monitoring,
as large numbers of distributed sensor stations are needed to gather significant amounts of data.

Novel ways of building $10-class rain gauges are currently being investigated. [1][2]

Recoding imagery/sound of rain impact on standardized reference surfaces might offer a feasible method for the quantitative study of precipitation.

However, video, images and audio files are typically too huge in size to be transported over wireless sensor networks.
Instead of transmitting media files, analysis of image/audio input might be undertaken on-site, and only numeric results communicated.

This project is to investigate the possibilities of

* image/audio analysis performed on arduino-type boards
* fast fourier transform (and related methods) on arduino-type boards

for hydro-meteorological monitoring.

Optical method:

In particular we suggest to study the cpabilities of the CmuCam system [3] for image analysis.

Optional:
======================================

Investigate the possibility of using CCTV imagery for hydro-meteorological studies.

Optional:
======================================

Investigate the possibility of utilizing high data rate transmission of full audio/video data,
reducing the sensor in complexity ("no processor board, pure network"),
performing analysis on gateway.

Water flow meter
======================================

(small project)

Measuring water flow across buildings, building complexes and campuses is a viable element of water management.

We are aiming at applying the methods of low cost arduino based sensing in order to create an inexpensive,
"clip-in" water flow meter,
which can be seamlessly deployed across infrastructures lacking metering functionality.

Data communication will use zigbee 900 MHz /2.4 GHz and/or 802.11_ 2.4 GHz
