PLANKS

Two weeks ago I had the honor of exhibiting the PLANKS for the first time. The PLANKS are a collaboration between the artist Henrik Menné and I and they are part of my research on computers as a material for design. The PLANKS bend when they detect a sound above a certain threshold. Each PLANK work individually but together create a stronger expression.

The PLANKS are placed outside the 3D hallway and will be exhibited until March 12.

Commercially tired

Perhaps I tire easily, but advertising and commercial messages can be really, really…tiresome. We oughtta cleanup our environment – SOMEBODY OUGHTTA DO SOMETHING…well, someone (kinda) did: With a sharp satirical twist (and a lot of lawsuits coming up), this site provoke us to think abouth the way we pollute our environment. I especially like the aquarium fish with the Iglo (frozen fish foods) logo on them.

Gaze talk?

According to this article from New Scientist, people become more altruistic (in not exploiting the “commons” when paying for coffee in apsychology department kitchen) when a simple pair of photocopied eyes was felt to be watching. The researchers seem to conlude that the “innate altruism” thesis might be on the wrong track. Personally, I’d like to beleive that we are naturally altruistic, and that it speaks more of psychology faculty and students. Also, what kind of altruism are we talking here – the kind of “turn the other cheek” unconditional altruims or the kind of reciprocal altruism (as in tit-for-tat in game theory?). In terms of InC, what are the implications of altruism and cooperation for Social Software, Creative Commons and stuff like that. I’m sure there’s at least a Pscyhology of Animal Behaviour masters here.
