These problems are characterized by 1) being under constrained, since containers assigned to a bay already fulfil global constraints and objectives, 2) being highly symmetric, since a bay may contain many container stacks with identical properties, and 3) having a large number of combinatorial side constraint due to business specific stacking rules. We seek to achieve fundamental understanding of the structure of this problem by comparing a wide range of exact and approximate optimization approaches including local search, integer prgramming, constraint programming, and column generation.
