GAMES AND
PUBLIC SERVICE: WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?
Computergames have become increasingly present in our everyday cultural
life. Games are not just for children anymore: millions of adults and
teenagers also play thousands of games on their PCs, cell phones and
consoles. In addition to being fun, games can be very serious, too.
More and more computergames are created as a form of communication,
for educational, political and social purposes.
For the first time in Denmark, this workshop will explore
the potential and challenges of computergames for public service.
How can computergames deal with social and political issues? How can
computergames empower
players through user-created content? How can we integrate the cross-genre
potential of public media in order to create pervasive game experiences
that help us better understand our social and cultural issues?
The “Gaming for the People!” workshop will feature both international and local experts, academics and designers that
will showcase previous successful examples of games that you beyond
entertainment (see Program).
Through panels and discussions, all participants will work together
into identifying some of the core themes and problems within this
area.
Come and join us in the exciting challenge of bringing public service
into the 21st century through the integration of computer games, traditional
and new media.
This workshop is sponsored by Diginet, DR and the IT University of
Copenhagen.
