Current Projects

Over the summer 2008 I was working with Julie Maitland on a research project looking at internet-based group behavior. We were studying groups on Facebook that focus on weight loss and applying different approaches of gender theory to our analysis. We submitted a paper to CHI 2009.

I am also working on a research project looking at the use of multi-functional mobile devices such as Blackberry's, iPhones and other PDA type phones. I am conducting a study with 30 users of these types of mobile phones in February through April 2008, building on a smaller pilot study from November 2007. My research collaborator is Valerie Polichar.

Previously I was working on a project exploring people's self-representation in terms of their location and whereabouts. Together with colleagues at Glasgow, I looked at how a friend finder application was used for creating group dynamics and keep social groups cohesive. The research was be presented at CHI 2008 in Florence.

In 2005 I worked on a new game called Yoshi, together with the Equator group at Glasgow University and Nottingham University. We were evaluating it by running trials of it at different locations, both in Glasgow and in Nottingham. We presented this work at CHI 2006.

Together with Barry Brown, I conducted a study of the use among early adopters of Personal Video Recorders such as TiVo and Sky+ as well as downloaders of video and movies. We are looking at how the practices among our user group can inform design of new video media technologies. We presented the work at CHI 2006 and are expanding this into a journal publication.

From October 2003 to March 2004 I was working with researchers at UC San Diego and UC Irvine on a large scale context-aware computing project called Active Campus. I was focusing on the interactional values of using location based services and highly interactive communication technology.
