When a larger organization must realize a strategy, program and portfolio management is essential for implementing the strategy as a portfolio of projects and programs. As a result, it becomes a core competency for many organizations to successfully manage the portfolio and implement projects and programs.

But the increasing amount of projects and programs increases the need for portfolio management too. Many organizations do not have enough resources to implement them all, which can impede development, complicate planning or removes focus. Companies are with time becoming better at implementing projects however too many projects still fails in various ways, ranging from significantly longer projects and cost overruns for projects that do not achieve their goals.

Programs are typically more complex than the projects, and the impacts are greater for the company when a program fails. With more resources at stake, it is crucial - sometimes for the future of the company - to have the right skills in the portfolio and program management.

Agility is an organizations ability, willingness, and culture to change. Agility is critical to an organizations ability to thrive and develop in an industry with many changes and growing uncertainty. The most agile or flexible organizations are in understanding and establishing a framework of strategy, culture, leadership, people and processes, the more likely they are at succeeding. Therefore, it is crucial for program and portfolio management to support the organizations road towards agility.
