OpenITU: Cybersecurity

Join us for a free and public debate on one of the most urging issues facing IT professionals and society at large these year.

As we become more reliant on modern technology, we also become more vulnerable to cybercrime. So how do we protect our information systems in the digital age? What are the main challenges facing IT professionals and society at large?

In this public event, we will debate cybersecurity from three different perspectives:

Carsten Schürmann, Associate Professor and Head of the DemTech Project at ITU will will discuss security concerns in relation to democracy and electorial processes

Kim Aarenstrup, Head of the National Cyber Crime Center (NC3), will talk about how the Danish police's efforts to battle cyber crime.

And in our final session, Tonny Raabjerg (CIO) & Rasmus van der Berg (Senior Developer & Architect) from the Danish security company CodeSealer will share their view on current security risks and tendencies and what companies can do to protect their information.

The debate will be moderated by Anders Høeg Nissen, Journalist and host of Harddisken på P1.

Democracy - Credible Elections
If we had online elections, could hackers change the election result and inflict serious damage on our democracy?  We can bank online and use mobile pay, so why not voting online?  Over the last decades, information technology has gradually transformed the electoral process, and election commissions from around the world are considering to move towards an internet based electoral process.  In his talk, Carsten Schürmann will discuss cybersecurity concerns of online elections and describe ways to mitigate risks.

Carsten Schürmann is a faculty member at IT University of Copenhagen, where he leads the DemTech project on democratic technologies. His research interests include election technologies and trust.  He received his PhD degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 2000, joined the computer science faculty at Yale University the same year, before moving to Copenhagen in 2005.  In 2015, he became the co-editor in chief of the journal on election technologies, JETS.  He is also a member of the IEEE working group on voting system standards in the US, and he has co-authored to publications for international IDEA.  Carsten Schürmann is also consulting with national election commissions and governmental agencies on election technologies.

National Cyber Crime Center, NC3:

Society - From good IT-investigation to world class cybercrime center
Kim Aarenstrup will talk about the Danish cybercrime unit, NC3 and their police investigation, which is peerless to any other police work in Denmark. He will give insights into the daily work of the unit but also address the challenges we face as a society with experts on cybercrime and cybersecurity as a very scarce resource. The presentation will also introduce the history and work of NC3 as an organization that has moved from a mediocre police unit to a leading cybercrime police center mixing police officers with it academics and spicing it all up with leading technologies.

Kim Aarenstrup is originally educated police officer but left the force in 1998 after 17 years on duty. Kim Aarenstrup astablished Kbh.s Politis Computer Crime Unit as the first of its kind. The cleared the way for Kim Aarenstrup to be employed as it-security consultant at Mærsk and later announced department manager for the global it and information security at A.P. Møller – Mærsk Group. After 14 years in Mærsk Kim Aarenstrup became the Nordic security industry leader at IMB and was from there recruited back to the police force to establish NC3 and the continuation of the subject he started many years before.

Design - Protection against unknown malware
Where many solutions protects against known malware and attacks, CodeSealer’s WSF protects even against unknown malware and infected devices - known as Man-in-the-Browser and Man-in-the-Middle attacks. At OpenITU CodeSealer will speak about the growing cyber security risks and how companies today are increasing their effort to protect their customers. CodeSealer will present their patented solution and how the solution works behind the scene, including a live demonstration.

Tonny Rabjerg has a broad international experience in leadership within it and has more than 30 years of experience working with application development within companies such as SAS, Amadeus, Star Alliance, Danske Bank and now as CIO at CodeSealer. Previously he has worked with bringing the airline industry into self service and online distribution and latest in the establishment of Danske IT and Support Services India, managing more than 850 people.

Rasmus van der Burg has worked with all aspects of web technology, from delivering online applications, UI’s and internet security. He has master from Aalborg University and a background from the graduate program at Danske Bank. Rasmus van der Burg is responsible for the WSF Client at CodeSealer.
